The Value of

MOVE MANAGERS for

Senior Clients

Moving is difficult at any age.

But it’s particularly hard on seniors, who are often simultaneously dealing with other challenges, including loss of mobility, loss of health, loss of independence, or loss of a spouse or other family member. Detaching from their home and decades of possessions can feel insurmountable.

What is a Move Manager?

A move manager is a specialized project manager who helps seniors tackle and feel in charge of the necessary changes in their living situation.

Move managers can handle a long list of details to help seniors transition smoothly, often providing emotional
support and creative approaches to solving issues as they arise.

What Services Do They Provide?

The scope of services offered varies from one move manager to another. Clients can typically select among different levels of support and add various ala carte services.

Some seniors may want a move manager to handle “everything,” whereas others may be getting help from family members and only want assistance with the physical move.

In most cases, the relationship with a move manager begins with an in-home consultation to discuss and determine the clients’ needs. Move managers may be able to:

  • Assist in downsizing and sorting possessions

  • Create a custom floorplan for placing furniture and belongings in the new space

  • Coordinate the placement of heirlooms with family members

  • Arrange for the profitable disposal of items that won’t be moved (antique or consignment sales, auction or estate sales, and online selling venues)

  • Make and document donations to charity

  • Organize the packing, moving, and unboxing of items on the other end

  • Arrange furniture, organize belongings, decorate, and hang pictures, so the new location immediately feels like home

While these are the most common services offered, move managers may also be able to assist in many other ways, including:

  • Technical support for setting up computers, televisions, and other digital equipment

  • Virtual meetings to help adult children remain involved without being physically present

  • Handling change of address and mail forwarding arrangements

  • Shutting off and turning on utility services

  • Arranging for the senior’s transportation to the new home

  • Plus other services, as needed, in each unique moving situation!

Since move managers understand how to declutter spaces and make them safe and comfortable for seniors, sometimes they are hired to help prepare a senior’s current home for aging in place.
